Do you think that the 'victim mentality' displayed by some people actually hurts their cause?

When a pagan, Hindu, etc. etc. tries to defend their legal rights to freedom of religion, you can almost guarantee that a Christian will claim that (somehow) their rights are being taken away. When a violent crime is committed against a person (black or white) and even one of the attackers is of the other race, someone will claim that it was racially motivated. Do you think that these people actually bring harm to the cause of good people in their group with their ridiculous accusations?
